Preventive Care Is the Most Powerful Care You'll Never Think About
Here is an uncomfortable truth about how most people approach their health: they engage with the system when something goes wrong. A fever spikes. A cut needs stitches. A cough won't go away. The appointment gets made, the visit happens, the treatment is received. But the years of disease prevention that could have kept that person healthier? That gets skipped because there's no urgency, no pain, and no obvious appointment to make.
Preventive care — vaccines, health screenings, and wellness checks — has a worse customer experience than illness care, and that is a genuine public health problem. The friction involved in scheduling a preventive appointment with a primary care physician often means it just doesn't happen.
MedCare Urgent Care has restructured preventive care around the way people actually live. Walk in when it's convenient. No appointment. Leave with your flu shot, TB test, or blood pressure check done. The entire model is designed to remove the friction that stands between you and staying healthy.
This guide covers every preventive service we offer across our five Metro Detroit locations.
Flu Shots and COVID Boosters
Who needs a flu shot? Everyone over the age of six months, every year, ideally before the end of October — though getting vaccinated at any point during flu season offers protection. The CDC consistently identifies influenza as a significant cause of preventable hospitalization and death, particularly in adults over 65, people with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, and young children.
At MedCare Urgent Care, we offer the current seasonal quadrivalent flu vaccine, which protects against four strains of influenza. High-dose formulations are available for patients over 65, offering stronger immune response in an age group that is statistically most vulnerable to flu complications.
COVID-19 boosters are also available on a walk-in basis. Our nursing staff stays current on updated formulation recommendations from the CDC. If you're unsure which COVID booster is right for you based on your vaccination history, our providers can advise you.
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) Boosters
Tetanus is a life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, commonly associated with deep wounds contaminated by soil or rust. Most people receive their initial tetanus vaccination in childhood, but immunity wanes over time. Tdap boosters are recommended every 10 years for adults.
There are two situations that make Tdap a particular priority:
After a wound: If you have stepped on a nail, suffered a deep puncture wound, or sustained a dirty laceration and your last tetanus booster was more than five years ago (or you're unsure), walk into any MedCare location and we can administer the vaccine on the same visit as wound treatment.
Before a newborn arrives: Healthcare providers and family members who will be in close contact with a newborn should receive a Tdap booster if they haven't had one recently. Pertussis (whooping cough) can be life-threatening in infants, and protecting the people in the baby's environment is one of the most effective ways to protect the child.
TB Testing (PPD Skin Test)
TB testing is required for employment in healthcare, education, food service, childcare, and many other fields in Michigan. The standard test is the PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) skin test, also known as the Mantoux test.
The process is a two-part visit. On your first visit, a small amount of tuberculin is injected just under the skin of your forearm. You must return within 48 to 72 hours to have the site read by our nursing staff. The result determines whether further evaluation is needed.
MedCare Urgent Care performs TB testing on a walk-in basis at all five locations, and our staff can sign and complete any required employment or school documentation. If you miss the reading window, the test must be repeated — we are strict about this requirement because it is a clinical necessity, not a policy preference.
Travel Vaccines
Michigan residents traveling internationally — particularly to developing countries — face exposure to infectious diseases that are largely eliminated in the United States. Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus are the most commonly required or recommended vaccines for international travel, depending on the destination.
MedCare Urgent Care offers pre-travel consultations and administers travel vaccines on a walk-in basis. We recommend scheduling your travel vaccines at least four to six weeks before departure when possible, as some vaccines require multiple doses or time to take effect. If you're leaving sooner, come in as early as possible — partial protection is better than none.
School and Work Immunizations
Many schools, colleges, and employers require documentation of specific immunizations as a condition of enrollment or employment. Common required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, hepatitis B, and meningococcal vaccines for college students.
Bring your immunization documentation requirements to any MedCare location. Our providers will review your history, identify any gaps, administer necessary vaccines, and complete the required paperwork during your visit. This is especially useful for students and new employees who need to meet compliance deadlines quickly.
Health Screenings: Know Your Numbers Before They Know You
Preventive health screenings identify risk factors before they become diseases. High blood pressure, elevated glucose, and high cholesterol are all conditions that often produce no symptoms until they cause a serious event — a heart attack, a stroke, or an organ failure.
MedCare Urgent Care offers walk-in health screenings for:
Blood Pressure: Hypertension affects millions of Americans and is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. A blood pressure check takes 60 seconds and costs nothing extra during a visit.
Blood Glucose: We screen for elevated blood sugar levels that may indicate diabetes or pre-diabetes. Early identification gives you the opportunity to make lifestyle changes or begin medication before complications develop.
Cholesterol (Lipid Panel): Elevated LDL cholesterol is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A simple blood draw gives us a complete lipid panel including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.
