On-Site Lab Testing at Urgent Care: What You Can Get Tested for Without a Hospital Visit

MedCare Urgent Care provides rapid on site lab testing at our five Metro Detroit locations to eliminate long diagnostic waiting periods. Patients can walk in without an appointment for immediate testing and receive results during the same visit. Our experienced medical teams handle everything from viral screenings to confidential blood work to help you start treatment faster.

  • Tests available Rapid screenings for flu strep throat COVID 19 and RSV along with urinalysis and blood work panels
  • Convenient scheduling No appointment is necessary and walk ins are welcome seven days a week
  • Extended availability Flu testing and select lab services are available twenty four hours a day at our Wyandotte and Dearborn Heights locations
  • Insurance and payment Most major insurance plans are accepted and affordable self pay options are available for patients without insurance

The Time Consuming Part In Modern Healthcare: Waiting for Test Results

One of the most frustrating aspects of navigating the healthcare system is the diagnostic waiting game. Your doctor orders labs. You drive to a separate facility. You wait days for results. You call to follow up. You get a callback from someone who can't answer your questions. You schedule another appointment. By the time you have a clear answer, a week has passed, and your condition may have worsened, improved on its own, or been mismanaged.

MedCare Urgent Care removes that bottleneck. Our clinics are equipped with on-site diagnostic lab technology that enables our providers to order, collect, and in many cases review results during your same visit. Whether you need rapid infectious disease testing, a urinalysis, blood work, or a cardiac screening, you can walk in without an appointment and get answers.

This guide covers every major diagnostic service we offer, who needs each test, and how to access our labs at five locations across Metro Detroit.

Rapid Infectious Disease Testing

Flu Testing (Influenza A & B): Rapid flu tests identify influenza A and B from a nasal swab in minutes. Results during your visit allow our providers to prescribe antivirals immediately if you test positive and are within the treatment window. Flu testing is available at all MedCare locations — including 24/7 at Wyandotte and Dearborn Heights.

Strep Throat Testing: Rapid strep testing determines within minutes whether your sore throat is caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. A positive result means you need antibiotics. A negative result helps confirm a viral cause, which clears on its own and does not benefit from antibiotics. This distinction matters for both your recovery and antibiotic stewardship.

COVID-19 Testing: Rapid antigen and PCR testing for COVID-19 is available on a walk-in basis. Knowing your COVID-19 status guides isolation decisions, helps protect vulnerable household members, and informs whether antiviral treatment like Paxlovid is appropriate.

RSV Testing: Respiratory Syncytial Virus is a significant concern for infants, young children, and older adults. Rapid RSV testing is available at MedCare and helps distinguish RSV from other respiratory illnesses with overlapping symptoms.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis is one of the most commonly ordered tests in urgent care. It screens for urinary tract infections, kidney abnormalities, blood in the urine, diabetes-related glucose spillover, and several other conditions. The test involves a simple urine sample, and results are typically available within minutes to an hour. If you have burning with urination, frequent urgency, cloudy urine, pelvic pressure, or back pain near the kidneys, a urinalysis is the appropriate first step.

Blood Work

MedCare Urgent Care performs in-house blood draws and processes a broad panel of common laboratory tests. While highly specialized panels may be sent to a reference laboratory, many standard tests are processed on-site with same-day results in most cases.

Blood tests available at MedCare include complete blood count (CBC), basic and comprehensive metabolic panels, glucose testing, hemoglobin A1c for diabetes monitoring, lipid panels, thyroid function tests (TSH), and mono testing. If your primary care physician has ordered labs but you'd prefer a more convenient draw location, our walk-in lab services are available to you.

STD Testing

Sexually transmitted infection testing is a health priority that many people delay simply because accessing testing feels uncomfortable or inconvenient. MedCare Urgent Care provides confidential, non-judgmental STD testing on a walk-in basis. We test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV. Testing is available to adults and adolescents.

If you have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection, are experiencing symptoms such as unusual discharge, genital sores, or burning with urination, or simply want the peace of mind of knowing your status, walk in. No appointment, no awkward phone calls. Our providers handle these conversations with complete professionalism and privacy.

EKG (Electrocardiogram)

An EKG records the electrical activity of your heart and is used to detect arrhythmias, signs of a prior heart attack, and other cardiac abnormalities. At MedCare Urgent Care, EKGs are available on-site for patients experiencing palpitations, unexplained shortness of breath, lightheadedness, or as part of a DOT physical or pre-employment screening.

Important: If you are experiencing chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or symptoms that suggest an active cardiac event, call 911 immediately. An EKG at urgent care is appropriate for evaluation of lower-acuity cardiac symptoms, not an active heart emergency.

Pregnancy Testing

Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are useful, but a clinical pregnancy test provides confirmed results with professional follow-up. MedCare offers urine pregnancy testing on-site, allowing our providers to confirm results and provide appropriate counseling and referrals for prenatal care.

Why On-Site Diagnostics Change Everything

The value of having diagnostics in the same building as your clinical provider cannot be overstated. When a lab is down the street or at a separate facility, there is always a gap between collecting the sample and making a treatment decision. When diagnostics are on-site, your provider can order a test, review results, adjust the clinical picture, and prescribe treatment without you ever leaving the building.

This is standard at MedCare Urgent Care. It is one of the primary reasons our patients avoid emergency rooms — not because their conditions aren't real, but because we can get them answers and care more efficiently in a walk-in setting.

Does Insurance Cover Urgent Care Lab Tests?

Most major insurance plans cover diagnostic testing when it is medically necessary. MedCare Urgent Care accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Medicaid, and many other plans. Our staff will verify your coverage when you check in. For patients without insurance, we offer transparent, affordable self-pay pricing. Our goal is to make diagnostic healthcare accessible to everyone in our communities.

X-rays are a critical diagnostic tool , helping physicians uncover a variety of conditions, from bone fractures to lung infections. At Medcare Urgent Care , we’re proud to provide fast and reliable X-ray services across our Michigan locations, ensuring you get timely answers to address your health concerns. Whether you’re in Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Eastpointe, or Livonia , we’re here to make diagnostic imaging easy and accessible. ‍ What is an X-Ray? ‍ X-rays use electromagnetic waves, a type of radiation, to create images of the structures inside your body. These waves pass through your body and are absorbed in different ways depending on the material. The result is a black-and-white image that allows doctors to observe bones, tissues, and other internal structures. • Bones appear white due to their high calcium content. • Fat and muscle tissues show as shades of gray. • Lungs appear black, as air absorbs the least radiation. While X-rays are excellent for diagnosing bone-related conditions, they cannot show soft tissues like cartilage or tendons. Doctors typically order X-rays when the results can impact the way an injury or condition is treated. ‍ When is an X-Ray Needed? X-rays are quick, painless, and non-invasive. During the procedure, you may stand or lie down, and a lead apron is often used to protect other parts of your body from radiation. While X-rays are safe, your doctor will only order them when necessary to minimize exposure to radiation. Here are common reasons you may need an X-ray: ‍ 1. Injuries and Bone Fractures X-rays are most commonly used to identify broken bones or dislocated joints. They are also used during the healing process to confirm that fractures are mending properly. However, sprains or ligament injuries may not always require X-rays. ‍ 2. Dental Concerns X-rays are critical for detecting cavities, gum disease, and bone loss in dental care. Dentists often recommend dental X-rays every 2–3 years or more frequently if an underlying condition is present. ‍ 3. Lung Conditions Chest X-rays help diagnose respiratory issues such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis. If you’re experiencing chest pain or difficulty breathing, a doctor may recommend an X-ray to assess the severity of your condition. ‍ 4. Cancer Screening X-rays are an essential tool for detecting certain cancers, such as bone cancer. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. ‍ 5. Arthritis Diagnosis Osteoarthritis, a condition affecting the tissues at the ends of bones, is diagnosed through X-rays. This imaging can also reveal cartilage loss and joint damage. ‍ 6. Monitoring Medical Implants After surgeries involving pacemakers, artificial joints, or other implants, X-rays ensure that devices are correctly placed and functioning properly. ‍ Why Choose Medcare Urgent Care for X-Rays? At Medcare Urgent Care , we bring hospital-level X-ray diagnostics to a walk-in clinic setting, combining cutting-edge equipment with affordability and convenience. Our experienced team ensures that your X-rays are performed quickly and interpreted accurately, so you can focus on your recovery. When you’re feeling under the weather or dealing with a minor injury, waiting for a doctor’s appointment isn’t always an option. At Medcare Urgent Care , we provide quick, affordable, and professional care for non-life-threatening conditions across our Michigan locations, including Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Livonia, and Eastpointe . Here’s why urgent care is the right choice when you need prompt medical attention. ‍ ‍ 1. Shorter Waiting Times Getting sick or injured rarely happens at convenient times, and most primary care offices operate within strict 9-to-5 hours. Medcare Urgent Care stands out with extended hours , offering flexibility that fits your schedule. Many of our locations are open until 9 or 10 p.m., providing care when you need it most. Additionally, urgent care centers help you avoid the long waits of emergency rooms (ERs) , which prioritize life-threatening cases. If your condition isn’t critical, you’ll save time and frustration by visiting urgent care instead of the ER. ‍ ‍ 2. Care for Non-Life-Threatening Illnesses Urgent care is designed for treating non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that still require immediate attention. At Medcare Urgent Care , we provide effective treatments for a wide range of conditions, including: ‍ • Cold or flu • Strep throat • Urinary tract infections • Burns and bug stings • Allergic reactions • Fevers and headaches • Skin allergies • Backaches ‍ In addition to treating illnesses, urgent care centers like The Heights Urgent Care also offer services such as: • Work and school physicals • X-rays and in-house lab testing • STD tests • Vaccinations • Pap smears ‍ For life-threatening conditions, such as chest pain, severe wounds, or difficulty breathing, always go to the ER or call 911. ‍ 3. Cost-Effective Care Urgent care visits are significantly cheaper than emergency room visits. While an ER visit can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, the average urgent care visit ranges from $60 to $120. For non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries, urgent care offers the same quality of care at a fraction of the cost. ‍ Why Choose The Heights Urgent Care? ‍ At Medcare Urgent Care , we provide fast, affordable, and professional care for a wide range of conditions. At MedCare Urgent Care, we know how disruptive spring allergies can be to your daily life. While the arrival of warmer weather brings blooming flowers and longer days, it also introduces pollen and other allergens that can trigger uncomfortable symptoms. From sneezing fits to itchy eyes, we’re here to help you manage your allergies so you can fully enjoy the beauty of the season. ‍ ‍ What Causes Spring Allergies? Spring allergies are primarily caused by allergens released into the air during the warmer months. These allergens can trigger your immune system, leading to uncomfortable symptoms. ‍ • Pollen : Trees, grasses, and weeds release tiny pollen particles to fertilize plants. These particles are the leading cause of spring allergies. • Mold : Thriving in damp environments, mold can grow outdoors in piles of leaves or indoors in poorly ventilated areas like basements. • Dust Mites : These microscopic insects live in bedding, carpets, and upholstery and are a common allergen year-round. ‍ Common Symptoms of Spring Allergies Recognizing the symptoms of spring allergies is the first step toward finding relief. Some of the most common symptoms include: ‍ • Sneezing and nasal congestion • Itchy, watery eyes • Runny nose or postnasal drip • Coughing and throat irritation • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating ‍ If these symptoms persist, visiting a healthcare provider can help you determine whether you’re dealing with allergies or another condition. ‍ How to Manage Spring Allergies While there isn’t a cure for allergies, you can take steps to reduce their impact on your life: ‍ 1. Start Treatment Early Begin taking allergy medications, such as antihistamines or nasal sprays, two weeks before symptoms typically start. This can help minimize your body’s reaction to allergens. 2. Monitor Pollen Counts Keep an eye on daily pollen levels in your area and try to stay indoors during peak times, usually in the evening for tree and grass pollen. 3. Clean Your Environment Regularly clean your home to reduce allergens like dust, pet dander, and mold. Use HEPA filters in your air conditioning units to trap airborne allergens. 4. Consider Allergy Shots Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, can help modify your immune system’s response to allergens and provide long-term relief. When to See a Doctor When to See a Doctor for Spring Allergies If over-the-counter remedies aren’t helping or your symptoms interfere with your daily life, it’s time to seek professional care.
